General Description / Primary Purpose

The Coordinator Research Programs and Services, under the direction of an Assistant Director or above, will design, develop, and implement departmental processes and/or programs. Recommends policies and procedures to ensure effective coordination of departmental programs.

Essential Duties

Job Function

The Coordinator will support the Resource Management Program @ the Guana Tolomato Matanzas National Estuarine Research Reserve (GTMNERR) and will be considered the Resource Management Biologist. This position is based at the southern GTMNERR office in Marineland, FL.

The position will have a lead role in maintaining the Reserve’s Geographic Information Database and conducting habitat mapping and change adhering to state and federal protocols. The position is also responsible for monitoring GTMNERR’s upland, estuarine, and freshwater habitats to guide science-based management of natural biodiversity with a focus on terrestrial and emergent coastal vegetation.

Duties/responsibilities include:
*Implementing the science-based land and estuarine management strategies of the GTMNERR’s Management Plan, including monitoring and implementing the GTMNERR’s Prescribed Fire Program, which includes guiding burn prescriptions based on the results of habitat monitoring
*Providing shapefiles, other map products, and general GIS/GPS technical support
*Creating habitat maps and assessing change over time
*Assessing the accuracy of remotely sensed data
*Developing and implementing monitoring protocols to assess the success of controlling invasive species in natural areas
*Monitoring natural hydrological conditions of GTMNERR-managed uplands and freshwater wetlands
*Accurately recording and analyzing data using standard software & statistical techniques

Required Qualifications

A Master’s degree from a regionally accredited college or university in a directly related area of specialization; or a Bachelor’s degree from a regionally accredited college or university and two years of experience directly related to the job functions.

The ideal candidate will demonstrate his/her ability to work as part of a team of staff & volunteers. A Bachelor’s degrees is required with a focus in biology, ecology or another environmental subject area. A Master’s degree with a focus in biology, ecology or another environmental subject area with a GIS focus is preferred. S/he must be familiar with Northeast Florida’s coastal ecosystem & upland habitats. S/he must be able to lift 50 lbs. Additional required qualifications include proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Access, spatial analysis in ArcGIS, and statistical analysis.

Statement(s) of Understanding Definition

This position requires a level II background check, which includes fingerprinting. In conjunction with the University’s policy, this position may also require a credit check.
