General Description / Primary Purpose

This position is a collaboration between the Thomas G. Carpenter Library and the Center for Instruction & Research Technology (CIRT). As part of the Library Instruction and Research Teams in Public Services, the Online Learning Librarian delivers library services for distance, online, and campus communities. As a member of CIRT’s Instructional Design Team, this position provides instructional support for online courses. The librarian facilitates communication between the Library and the University Distance Learning (DL) Committee. Provides information literacy and research service to faculty and students in accordance with ACRL Standards for Distance Learning Library Services. Plans, delivers, promotes, and assesses distance library services. Participates in research and instruction services. Maintains an understanding of the role of libraries in online learning and demonstrates knowledge of best practices and current trends related to instructional technology. Works under the supervision of the Head of Instruction and the CIRT Assistant Director for Online Course Development. The work schedule for this position is split between and agreed upon by the Library and CIRT.

Essential Duties

Job Function

1. Participates as a member of the Instruction and Research Teams within the UNF Library and serves as a member of the UNF DL Committee, advocating for off campus and online student needs within each group. Works closely with the DL Committee, CIRT, and other UNF entities to assess college and departmental needs for library services for distance education and to identify opportunities for collaboration on new campus services.
• Develops and delivers faculty training that supports the use of library resources in online courses, participating as a member of CIRT’s Instructional Design Team.
• Develops and publishes documentation to support use of library services for online courses.
• Provides online instruction for online courses upon instructor request.
• Continually assess online learning library services and makes recommendations for improvement, including input to collection development for disciplines with online programs and courses.
• Acts as a liaison between the Library and CIRT.
2. Facilitates the planning, development, promotion, delivery, and assessment of library services to students and faculty online and face-to-face. Works with the Instruction and Research Teams and the Head of Instruction to provide these course-integrated, online, or in-person services to library users.
3. Provides research service to a variety of library patrons by assessing information needs, identifying appropriate resources, and providing training and assistance in their use. Conducts individualized research consultation sessions. Teaches Library and CIRT staff about new research products.
4. Serves as library liaison for assigned academic department(s). In collaboration with teaching faculty, develops select areas of the library subject resources by identifying and selecting new materials and by evaluating existing materials for possible withdrawal from the collection. Proactively engages with departmental faculty to understand their library needs, develop collegial partnerships, and promote library services.
5. Contributes to overall collection development through participation in the evaluation and development of the collection and in the review and selection of research databases and other library resources.
6. Prepares LibGuides for faculty and students on online learning issues, and answers basic questions and refers users to the University Counsel, as needed, for copyright issues.

Preferred Qualifications

Requires an ALA-accredited Masters of Library Science degree. At least two years academic library experience in providing instruction. Demonstrable experience provision of online instruction. Demonstrable commitment to customer service. Demonstrable experience in giving presentations to diverse constituencies. Demonstrable ability to multitask, prioritize, and work both independently and as part of a team in a fast-paced work environment.

PREFERRED: Experience with Instructional Design. Experience with Open Educational Resources (OER). Experience creating library instructional materials in an academic setting. Experience providing reference and research support in all modes, particularly email, chat, and videoconference. Familiarity with online course delivery and experience in developing online resources for library users.

Applicants with 5 years of experience in academic libraries post MLS may be hired at the rank of Associate Librarian, with a salary of $55,000.00 to negotiable.
