Job Summary/Responsibilities

This position supports the work of faculty teaching laboratory classes in the Biology Department. The primary duties of this job entail preparing reagents (20%), preparing student materials for weekly labs (20%), maintaining inventory (20%), organizing and cleaning the lab spaces (30%), and coordinating weekly tasks with the Teaching Laboratory Manager (10%).

The job requires an understanding of the purpose of general biology lab work. A person in this position will perform a wide variety of tasks, so it is essential for the workers to be flexible and hard- working individuals who convey a positive work ethic.

All work requires the adherence to specific preparation protocols and safety measures. A person in this position will need to work without supervision and will report directly to the teaching laboratory manager.

Responsibilities:

  • Collects & maintains living invertebrate specimens for use in the teaching labs.
  • Disposes of specimens that are used for dissection labs.
  • Removes chemical and biohazardous wastes from labs.
  • Prepares chemical solutions for use in the teaching labs.
  • Operates industrial washer and autoclave as needed.
  • Maintains safety records for the Teaching Laboratory Manager.
  • Provides support for annual inventory of Department equipment.
  • Delivers orders to the respective labs.
  • Completes lab preparation for designated teaching labs.
Required Qualifications

Applicants for this position must be eligible for and accept Federal Work Study funding; must be enrolled in at least six semester hours; and must have met satisfactory academic progress requirements in order to receive financial aid.

Preferred Qualifications

Biology major.
